Tip of the Cap

Here at Freddy’s we like to focus on the positive, not the negative, and today we give a sincere tip of the Fragile Freddy cap to the New York Yankees.

On this day just 11 months since the horrific tragedy at Virginia Tech the Yanks loaded up the club and went to Virginia. At on campus English Field the Yankees, with a traveling roster featuring Posada, Cano, Giambi, Jeter, A-Rod, Damon, Abreu, and others faced the Virginia Tech baseball team
(thanks Hokie Sports!).

This is largely a symbolic gesture but sometimes all we have are symbols. No charity will bring back the young men and women who saw their lives cut short on an April day and no baseball game can erase memories.

But what can happen is that a spring day in Virginia can be remembered for something positive, not something negative. That the Yankees agreed to participate in this event is an act of kindness, that they sent a squad featuring as many key players as they did is far more than that and something to be admired.

For many in Virginia spring days on the campus of Virginia Tech will bring memories of horror and sadness. Perhaps for some they will now also bring memories of joy as people will remember seeing future Hall of Famers and great players for one of the most famous sports teams in the world.

We all mourn in our own way and we all recover in our own way. Hopefully the arrival of the Yankees to Blacksburg will help someone take a step forward in returning his emotional life back the way it was when he woke up on what seemed an ordinary April morning eleven months ago.
